earned income

earned income
The following types of income are treated as earned income:
• income from employment;
• income from trades, professions, and vocations;
• foreign business profits;
• patent and copyright income received by the creator;
• a proportion of the annuity paid to a retired partner.
There is little difference in the tax treatment of earned and unearned income under the present UK taxation system. Previously, unearned income was subject to an additional tax (the investment-income surcharge).
